Windsor curling club destroyed in blaze

September 25, 2007

CBC News Article 2007

A blaze destroyed a nearly century-old curling club in the town of Windsor, N.S. late Tuesday afternoon. At its peak, up to 150 firefighters from eight fire departments battled thefireat the old wooden building.

But two hours after the blaze broke out around 4 p.m., all that was left was the charred remains of the Windsor Curling Club. Windsor FireDepartment Chief Fred Fox said the fire is suspicious, but there is no word yet on the cause.

Wanda Donelle, who used to run the women's curling club at the rink, said the club wasgearing upto celebrate its centennial.  "It was a very vibrant club," she said. "So, the loss of this club is devastating to the club membership current and past and to the town of Windsor."

Windsor curling rink to be rebuilt

February 7, 2008

A historic curling rink in Windsor, N.S., destroyed by fire last fall will be replaced by one more environmentally friendly, members of the Windsor Curling Club have decided.

Club president Rae Winkelaar said the new rink and clubhouse will be like the original one, but with more energy-efficient modifications. For instance, he said, heat generated from the ice-making machine will be redirected to heat the club's social room.

But creating an environmentally friendly rink will be expensive, said Winkelaar. "Just the fact that we're going … green, of course, that costs more money, and that's why we've applied for a grant," he said. A portion of the construction costs will be covered by insurance money but the club also plans to apply for provincial government grants through the Be Fit program and the Nova Scotia's Ecotrust fund. Chuck Porter, MLA for West Hants, said he supports the club's efforts to rebuild.
